The George & Dragon

Our

Story

The George & Dragon is a restaurant and pub in the medieval cinque port town of Sandwich in Kent.

The inn was originally built in the 24th year of the 1st reign of Henry VI, in 1446.

It was  for many years to follow a dwelling house, owned by the estate of Peter Taychell, who possessed the mortgages on properties and lands in Sandwich, Ash and Wingham.

In 1552 Thomas Webb took advantage of the newly formed Licensing Registration act of 1549.  He was granted a licence to sell ales from the premises. At this time the house bore no title of registration.

In 1615 Francis Scoones came to the house and registered it under the name of “George and Dragon”.  It has remained under the same name since.

The George and Dragon is under new management from the team that run The Zetland Arms in Kingsdown, Deal. Friendly staff are on hand to help you with anything that you require. The premises feature a bar and a restaurant with a view that leads out to a courtyard garden. The George & Dragon is dog friendly and within a stone’s throw of Sandwich Quay, which has scenic views and a large car park.
